Dick Gelhaus is a clubby kind of guy. But the kinds of clubs he favors are busy being used during the daytime, not at night. Dick is a golf aficionado, and volunteers several weeks each year as a tournament official with the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA).
Lest you think he's simply leading the sporting life, remember that the Northern California offices of Accretive Solutions sponsor three to four not-for-profit golf tournaments a year. So it pays to know the rules of the game. As for all that time in the fresh air and sunshine, trying to avoid sand traps and water hazards—well, that's Dick's handicap.
For past four years, as one of the NCGA's more than 300 volunteers, Dick helps carry out the activities of the NCGA in administering more than 200 days of amateur championships. Tournament officials are responsible for conducting all NCGA tournaments, functioning as rules officials and monitoring the pace of play to ensure a first-rate experience for the competitors. As part of their program, a rules certification program is available for volunteers seeking advanced training.
